Walk 'n' Roll
Kids being healthy, helping the environment, and reducing neighborhood traffic while walking and riding to school!

Walk ‘n’ Roll Wednesdays was started in the fall of 2007 by Ellie Hammargren of Concordia Elementary School in San Clemente, California and Sandra Cashen of Highlands Elementary School in Boise, Idaho. The two women are friends and mothers of daughters who ride bikes to school.
They started Walk ‘n’ Roll for four main reasons:
1. It’s fun: Walking and riding bikes to school with friends is fun. It’s social. Cars can be very isolating.
2. It’s healthy: Using your own foot power to get to school is good exercise for the body and mind.
3. It helps make our streets safer: Many elementary schools have way too much car traffic in and around them. Less cars means less traffic and safer streets.
4. It’s earth friendly: Less cars also means less air pollution. The students have a direct hand keeping our air clean and helping our environment.
Other benefits of Walking and Rolling:
You can loose weight.
You can do better in school. Exercise wakes up your brain. Your brain is a muscle, too. Studies have shown that kids do better academically if they walk or ride to school.
You get to know your neighbors.
Moms and dads get trim. Many adults who have taken to walking or riding as transportation (like to work) have lost weight.
You save money on gas.
You develop healthy habits. You may walk or ride to the grocery store, library or to a friends house. You are no longer habitually hopping in the car.
